Rolling Friction and Adhesion between Smooth Solids
نویسنده
چکیده
Rolling friction has been explained in terms of crack propagation through an adhesive joint. The contact between a smooth cylinder and flat has been regarded as an adhesive junction bounded by two cracks moving in the same direction at the same speed, one crack continually opening and one closing. Propagation of these cracks requires a force which is calculated from crack theory and shown to be equal to the friction. The theory has been verified experimentally using glass cylinders rolling on smooth rubber. Results show that rolling friction is closely connected with peel adhesion. Moreover, this adhesion interpretation of rolling friction between smooth surfaces explains several observations: (a) the existence of a static rolling friction, (b) the unusually high value of friction and its independence from load and roller radius, (c) the marked effect of lubricant or dust.

Theory of viscoelastic lubrication
We study the lubricated (wet) contact mechanics of a smooth hard cylinder sliding on a randomly rough nominally flat surface of a linear viscoelastic solid. We calculate the rolling and sliding friction, and study the transition from the boundary lubrication to the elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication regime. For the viscoelastic contact the minimum (average) separation does not monotonically increa...

Background: The immune-mediated responses in vascular cells may include the increased expression of endothelial adhesion molecules, leukocyte rolling and infiltration, cellular lipid dysregulation and vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) differentiation. Investigating the cellular and molecular events involved in the rolling process is useful for treatment or prevention of the vessel stenosis es...
متن کاملInvestigation of Friction Coefficient Effects on Fishtail Defect in Hot Ring Rolling Process
Hot ring rolling is a highly nonlinear, unsteady-state and asymmetry process which is affected by many parameters. The friction coefficient between the ring ,the driver roll and the idle roll is one of the problems, which has significant effect on the quality of final product. In this study, the effect of these two parameters on hot ring rolling was investigated based on a 3D coupled-thermo mec...
متن کاملAdhesion and friction in gecko toe attachment and detachment.
Geckos can run rapidly on walls and ceilings, requiring high friction forces (on walls) and adhesion forces (on ceilings), with typical step intervals of approximately 20 ms. The rapid switching between gecko foot attachment and detachment is analyzed theoretically based on a tape model that incorporates the adhesion and friction forces originating from the van der Waals forces between the subm...

Here, we have utilized Lateral Force Microscopy (LFM) based mechanical pushing of micro/nano-objects to study adhesion and friction characterization at the micro/nanoscale. Continuum micro/nano-friction models for particle rolling, spinning and sliding cases are discussed for general particle-substrate interfaces. A rolling resistance model using the Double-Hertz model is devoloped for such gen...
